Role of the Parish Council
Purpose
Bradford on Tone Parish Council sees its primary role as providing a democratic voice for the parish of Bradford on Tone. The Parish Council aims to support and contribute towards the economic and social life of the community by providing services of the highest quality in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and value for money. The Parish Council conducts its business openly and democratically and will consult with the community where appropriate.
Continuing Key Objectives
Planning Applications
The Parish Council is a Statutory Consultee for planning applications and as such does not make the decision as to whether or not a planning application is granted. The Parish Council may comment on a planning application and that is fed into the planning process. Somerset West and Taunton Deane Council is the planning authority for the majority of planning applications in Bradford On Tone, and will issue the decision notice (Planning Determination) once their investigations into the application, consultation period and decision-making process has been completed
Parish Council Finance
The Parish Council receives a precept, which is part of the Council Tax paid by each household. The precept for 2022/23 s £10,000. The precept is set very year by the parish council and is calculated by working out the estimated income and expenditure and ensuring that there are sufficient funds available for contingencies (unexpected items or emergencies).
In addition the Parish Council receives annual grants towards the upkeep of the churchyard and maintenance of the public rights of way network in the parish.
The Parish Council has its accounts and processes audited by an independent person appointed by the Parish Council (internal auditor) and a person appointed in accordance with legislation (external auditor).

Parish Council Meeting Information
The press and public are always welcome at meetings and there is a public participation item on agendas so that members of the public can bring matters relevant to the parish to the attention of Councillors; it is not necessary to contact the Clerk before attending and speaking at the meeting but it is helpful. Matters raised by the public, which are not listed on the agenda will be listened to but not discussed nor any decisions made.
Where appropriate Councillors are required to declare an interest (personal and/or judicial) on any agenda item in accordance with the Code of Conduct.
The Annual Parish Meeting is held each March. This is an opportunity for village organisations to give a report on the past year’s activities and future objectives.
